When Should I Change My Brakes?

When Should I Change My Brakes? Though it’s probably not the most exciting way to spend an afternoon, getting your brakes checked is an extremely critical service that shouldn’t be neglected for too long. To help keep our customers safe and protected on the road, our team at Larsen’s Auto Repair has compiled a small list of indicators that your brakes may be in need of servicing.

  1. Squeaking or Squealing Noises If you notice a high-pitched whine whenever you go to stop your vehicle, you will probably need to schedule an appointment. This noise is due to a small metallic indicator that’s built-into your brake pad to alert you that your brakes are in-need of inspection.

  2. Grinding/Growling While Braking When you press on your brake pedal, does your car make low grinding sounds? If so, this could be a sign that not only are your brake pads worn-down, but that your brake discs and calipers are connecting. Bring your car in for an inspection quickly if you notice this type of noise to prevent further damage.

  3. Harder Time Braking/Slowing Down This is an especially dangerous indicator that your brakes are in-need of service. When your car takes twice as long as usual to come to a complete stop, then it is definitely time to see a licensed professional. Save yourself the trouble of a preventable car accident by taking your car in today.

  4. Spongy or Soft Brake Pedals If your brake pedal is “soft” or “sponge-like” when you go to press on it, it could mean that there is a leak in your brake hydraulic system. Because this is a very dangerous indicator of a faulty brake system, we recommend you visit our automotive experts at Larsen’s Auto Repair for a thorough brake inspection if you notice any changes in your braking abilities.

If you start to notice any of these changes in your vehicle’s braking system, we encourage you to visit a licensed and accredited auto mechanic as soon as possible to ensure that your car’s brake system is working correctly and safely.

Best wishes,

The Larsen’s Auto Repair Family
